My Car is born from the photographer's car-phobic nature – fear of not being able to see people’s faces in the vehicles and the potential of automobiles to turn into killing machines. Facing Utica’s car-centered society, I was inclined to take not only the automobiles but also a wider concept of “cars”: things with wheels such as bikes, strollers, wheelchairs, and cart dollies. Those more intimate and human-scale vehicles, in contrast, reveal the faces behind the cars.
By juxtaposing automobiles with those personal vehicles and the historical building’s background with capitalistic stores or highways, I seek to retrieve the stories behind the cars, which have been lost in speed and convenience in the landscape of Utica. My work challenges the automobile-paced society to take a breath, explore the history of Utica, and connect with the past and the present.
